Description
Golden Green color with a red and pink striped blush, a sweet flavor with lingering acidic notes. This variety was raised by Mrs Dorsett in The Bahamas in the 1950s. It is one of a very small group of apple varieties that can flourish in tropical climates, because of its exceptionally low chilling requirement of less than 300 hours. An outstanding sweet apple for warm winter areas Dorsett Golden flowers in southern Calfornia in January and late February in Florida, far ahead of most varieties, so pollination is a potential issue. It is often paired with another low-chill variety, Anna which is also descended from Golden Delicious. The apples ripen late June / early July in southern California. Like most early season varieties the apples do not keep, however the flesh is lightly crisp and with a good flavor. Flavor is apparently better in apples which are slightly shaded.
- Available in the early summer in warmer climates and mid-fall in colder climates.
- Hardiness Zone: 5-9
- Full Sun
- A good pollinator for Anna Apple and Ein Shemer
- Years to bear -2
Bare Root Plants: the plant is shipped with the roots taken out of the pot. The roots are then wrapped in moist paper, with or without soil. The roots wrapped in moist medium is then covered with some kind of plastic to hold the moisture. The paper with moisture will keep the plant alive, during the journey. The plants once received, the roots should be given a soak for 30 minutes and planted immediately.
Note: plant is shipped in its pot, firmly secured with several layers of clear tape, thereby avoiding any shuffling and moving during transit. The plant reaches you with minimal damage very safe and secure. We have been shipping plants like this for several years (plants are sometimes shipped in smaller pots for safety and ease of shipping). Most plants go dormant in Fall and Winter and will lose most of their leaves looking dead and dry, this is very normal. They will flush out in Spring.
We cannot ship certain plants and some sizes to California due to restrictions placed by the Department of Agriculture.
